Hi Elspeth- I have just discovered this website. What a wealth of information! As my Grandfather (on my Mother's side), Herbert Leo Jarrett, was one of the SA British Farm Apprentice Scheme boys 1913-14, (and later a Soldier Settler near Cleve), I am most happy to post. Thank you for such a marvellous site and for your research, Nigel
PS- To my knowledge, Herbert was a Soldier Settler near Cleve after WW1. He married Florence Dix and had 4 children- Shirley, Valerie (my Mother), Margaret and Eric. Staying on the land proved not possible, so he moved to Colonel Light Gardens (Hastings St) where I have my earliest memory of him. He was a council worker, and died in retirement at about age 82. He never spoke of WW1 or his apprenticeship, probably due to the enduring pain of loosing his brother in the war and the horrific sights he saw as a stretcher bearer. I have some photographs of the farm house on the Soldier Settlement property.

Nigel - your grandfather was brother to my grandfather (Bernard (Joseph) Jarrett). He wrote me a letter before his death describing the day that he met his two brothers, Leo and Eric, leaving for overseas. Unfortunately, the letter was lost when I gave it to someone to photocopy for the family. I met some of your family when I first came to Australia - and coincidentally am now living in Adelaide. I would be delighted to make contact - my cousin Joe has collected more information on that generation. Helena Sweeney

Hi Im Joe, the cousin of Helena mentioned above. Ive have pictures of graves at Honkanbry Cemetry in Kent of : Frederick and Jessie Jarrett who lived at 36 Cambrian Rd. (Ive also got a pic of the house itself) Jack (John Francis) Jarrett Edward (Ted) Jarrett George Jarrett and wife Rachel
Our grandad Bernard Jarrett dictated a letter to your Mum the year he died in 1982. He mentiones a bit about his life as a child. In the letter is a reference to a Daryl Jarrett, 144 Marlborough St, Henley Beach, Adelaide, SA. with the caption (Grandson of Leo Jarrett).
Just to add that the site is great. Wish we had this a few years ago.
Joe
